We'll get rid of wrinkles: 3 most effective methods of skin rejuvenation

Everyone is afraid of wrinkles, but for some people wrinkles are like the end of the world. They are, however, aware of the fact that wrinkles are inevitable as a natural part of the ageing process. Today, we will learn how to prevent wrinkles and reduce those you already have.

Our skin has an upper layer called epidermis and a bottom layer called dermis. The latter has collagen and elastin fibres, which give our skin its bounce and elasticity. The amount of collagen and elastin decreases with age and wrinkles appear. Besides age-related changes, wrinkles can also be caused by UV rays, smoking, unhealthy diet, sleeping on one's side, and active use of facial expressions.

We should first mention that the best way to fight wrinkles is to prevent their appearance. In this article, we will discuss three cornerstones of wrinkle prevention: sleep, diet, and skin care. It's worth noting that smoking drastically accelerates the appearance of signs of ageing, and some experts believe it to be the second most important factor after UV rays. Smoking contributes to collagen breakdown and impairs blood circulation. So even if you have wrinkles already, it's never too late to quit smoking, since this will slow the process of skin ageing and keep your lungs healthy.

Sleep

As we said, it's very important to choose the right position to sleep in. It's considered best to sleep on your back, which is good for one's spine and complexion. When you sleep on your side, your cheek is pressed against the pillow and your skin experiences this unnatural position all night. It's especially harmful if you sleep on the same side all the time. With time, one side of your face starts to change shape, whereas the other side stays the same. That's why you should learn to sleep on your back, and most importantly, do so while maintaining good posture. An orthopedic pillow is always a plus. You might also consider using another pillow to elevate your knees during sleep. Also, the optimal room temperature during sleep is 18-20 degrees Celsius.

When we don't get enough sleep, our body starts producing a stress hormone called cortisol, which makes skin drier and duller. Bad sleep really affects our skin. According to this study, scientists chose 60 women, some of whom had good sleep, and others who didn't. Researchers studied changes in the number of wrinkles on the women's skin, as well as its pigmentation and elasticity. It turned out that those women who got adequate sleep looked visibly younger.

Diet

Nutrition is also an important factor when it comes to taking care of one's skin. Your food should be rich in elements that stimulate collagen production. These are mostly antioxidants and amino acids (proline, glycine, lysine). Antioxidants take care of your health by boosting cellular rejuvenation. For instance, people who consume more vitamin C have less wrinkles and their skin is less dry. There's a lot of vitamin C in broccoli and citrus fruits. Fatty acids are also a major factor. For instance, omega-3 amino acid helps the body keep the skin elastic and moisturised. Our body doesn't produce fatty acids, so it's very important to consume them. Spinach, avocados and salmon all contain a lot of these acids. They also help you fight acne, dermatitis, and psoriasis. It's also advised to reduce alcohol consumption to a minimum, if not give it up altogether: it dries the skin, dulls its colour, and leads to early wrinkles.

Skin care

The topic of sun rays' damaging effect on the skin is constantly discussed, and that's why UV rays are truly one of the key factors contributing to skin ageing. According to this research, those who use sunscreen have a lower chance of showing signs of ageing. So don't ignore SPF care, especially in the summer. Everyone should use sunscreen to slow the ageing process, including those with darker skin. A comprehensive, daily beauty routine is the best thing you can possibly do to make your skin healthy. It's worth noting that everyone shows signs of ageing regardless of these conditions – it's a natural process. But it's up to you to make those signs appear later in life and make them less visible. You must have nourishing and moisturising products rich in antioxidants in your cosmetics bag. Vitamin C, vitamin E, hyaluronic acid, and nicotinamide – these are some of the ingredients which are especially good for your skin. But it's better to avoid toxic ingredients, since they bring more harm than good.

Physical exercise is also a key element of personal care. It boosts blood flow and improves oxygen levels, helping the body produce more collagen.

All things considered, the best way to avoid skin ageing is to lead a healthy lifestyle. A good night's sleep, healthy diet and proper skin care – these are three key rules to delay the appearance of wrinkles as much as possible. Two things to avoid are smoking and alcohol, as both dry the skin and impair collagen production.
