The beauty ABC: coconut oil

There are many ways to use coconut oil. It is not only a wonderful treatment for skin and hair, but it is also good for your teeth, can be cooked with and has many other miraculous properties.

What’s the secret of its success?

Unsaturated fatty acids are one of the main components of coconut oil. Myristic and lauric acids makes the oil firm at temperatures below 20 degrees, but also allow it to penetrate the skin easily. It is relatively hard to find anything that can so quickly make our skin silky soft. It forms a protective layer on the skin that helps to maintain the optimal moisturisation balance.

Coconut oil not only nourishes the skin wonderfully, but it also prevents premature ageing and smoothes out wrinkles.  So it is a good treatment for  dermatitis, psoriasis and other skin infections. It can also reduce the signs of sun allergies. Coconut oil is essential in the summer. It not only maintains your fresh tan, but it also saves you money. In many cases coconut oil is cheaper and more effective than other after-sun products.

Your hair can also benefit from some of the wonder stuff. The lauric acids in coconut oil visibly revitalises and moisturises hair, helps to prevent dandruff and supports hair growth, particularly if it is used for regular head massages and hair treatments. To give the hair particularly deep nourishment, spread coconut through your hair once a week and massage it into your scalp. Leave the oil in overnight and wash it out thoroughly with shampoo the next morning. The longer you leave the oil to work, the more effective it is. If your hair doesn’t need such an intensive treatment, you can leave the oil in for 1 to 2 hours before washing your hair.

Tip: let coconut oil turn to liquid by heating it up in a bowl over boiling water. This makes it easier to spread through and work into your hair. You can also put the coconut oil in the microwave for 10 seconds. But no longer or it might burn!
