The power of aromas

Modern science has confirmed what the ancient Egyptians knew: aroma molecules go directly via our nose (which can differentiate between 10,000 smells) to the area of our brain that controls our feelings and emotions and stores the information, which is how instinctive behaviour arises.  Aromas that reach our olfactory cerebrum are able to release the body’s own messenger substances through an electrical transformation process. Essential oils are a liquid produced by distilling leaves, blossom, peel, roots or other plant parts.

Vanilla

No other flavour evokes in us such a wealth of memories. The scent calms, increases concentration, helps if you’re in a bad mood or depressed, relieves blockages and tensions. Vanilla also reduces the desire for sweet things.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon oil, produced from cinnamon bark, is stimulating, warming and helps to protect against colds. But use the oil with caution as it contains a lot of cinnamic aldehyde that can cause skin problems. So use sparingly!

Orange

Orange oil has a calming and relaxing effect on the stomach/abdominal area, it stimulates appetite and helps with digestive problems or flatulence. Orange oil has a stimulating effect on the kidneys, bladder and heart and stimulates lymph flow. Essential oils in a diffuser can work wonders on stress, anxiety, nervous tension, melancholy and low mood.

Grapefruit

Grapefruit is known for its ability to draw toxins from the body and activate the lymph system. So it’s ideal for aiding weightloss. Add a few drops of oil to your drinking water. Used in an aroma lamp, the oil encourages fat-burning in the body, also by curbing hunger.  Grapefruit generally creates a good mood.

Rose geranium

Oil from the rose geranium tightens tissues, aids mature and tired skin and has a smoothing effect on all skin types. It also promotes wound healing, skin regeneration, reduces pain and is suitable for all ages.

Rose geranium has a balancing, harmonising and calming effect on anxious and stressed people who are worried about others.
