Hair oil is a long-neglected beauty classic

Hair oils give you immediate shine, intensive care and prevent split ends. But what is the secret of this liquid all-round care? Hair oils are now trendy again. They are not new discoveries, but long-neglected beauty classics. Our grandmothers used them for haircare.

And in ancient Rome, Cleopatra was thought to have had them.  For many years hair oils have been neglected, with conditioners and hair treatments being used instead. They gave hair a beautiful shine, but could be greasy. Since then, hair oils have been refined to avoid that side effect. Today’s products are more dry and yet produce intensive care results.

How does hair oil work?

It sounds too good to be true that a nourishing oil doesn’t make hair greasy or heavy. But it is possible because the new care oils have been developed synthetically. So they don’t have the heaviness, but retain the nutrients. Fatty acids are used that are so little that they aren’t heavy on the hair. Alternatively, they use fine hair oil molecules that don’t lie directly on the hair. So they don’t make hair heavy and limp. 

But a very fine layer of oil rests on the cuticle layer on the outside of the hair shaft. This seals porous hair, protecting it and giving it optimal shine. Valuable nutrients from various plant oils are used (such as coconut oil, argan oil or olive oil). The care product is generally enriched with silicone oil. This doesn’t damage the hair and is  used widely in the beauty industry. 

How and when should hair oil be used?

If hair oil is used before washing the hair, it has a cleansing and nourishing effect. Massage it into dry or wet hair and leave it to work for about 10 minutes. After washing the hair it should be applied to wet hair. When used to combat split ends, it can be applied to dry hair. For an intensive treatment, leave the hair oil in overnight. For this, massage it into the length of the hair. As mentioned before, it can also be used to make your hair shine.  For this, put some hair oil on your palm and gently rub it throughout your hair.
