Skin care with acids

Fruit acid peels have been around for a while. They are good for treating acne, spots and blackheads and giving skin an even complexion.  We don’t really know which specific acids are used. We’ll tell you the effects of certain acids on the skin.  Before using any acid on your skin you should consult a doctor or cosmetician.

Glycolic acid Glycolic acid is a natural fruit acid that can remove the upper skin layer and so give the skin a new radiance. Removing the upper skin layer reduces dark patches and little wrinkles.   This makes the complexion more even and radiant.  Glycolic acid skin treatment is suitable for all skin types, particularly for people with fine lines and wrinkles.

Salicylic acid: Salicylic acid is particularly good for treating acne, spots and blackheads. Salicylic acid accelerates skin regeneration and supports the formation of elastin and collagen. It breaks the bonds between dead cells and the skin and so gives you pure skin. It penetrates deep into the skin and is more effective than fruit acids.  Treatment with salicylic acid is suitable for oily, mixed and blemish prone skin.

Hyaluronic acid Hyaluron is considered an anti-ageing wonder weapon. It moisturises the skin by binding water under the skin and functioning as a water store.  It plumps and firms the skin. It is suitable for all skin types, particularly for  dry or acne prone skin that requires oil-free care.

Ascorbic acid: Also known as pure vitamin C, it has an anti-inflammatory effect on skin, protects against UV rays, stimulates collagen synthesis, has a brightening effect and protects the skin from free radicals.  It can be used on all skin types without problem.

Ferulic acid: Ferulic acid is an organic compound that is present in various plants. It reduces fine lines, wrinkles, age spots and saggy skin. It also increases the skin’s elasticity and resilience and repairs damage from UV rays. It is suitable for all skin types without limitations.

Citric acid: Citric acid is also known in cosmetics as AHA. Fruit acid is known for its astringent, exfoliating and regenerating properties. It is recommended for pale, dull skin and for giving you an even, refined complexion. Note that citric acid makes skin more sensitive to light. Citric acid should only be used in the evening and a higher SPF should be worn during the day throughout the period of use.

Lactic acid: Despite its name, lactic acid is a gentle ingredients that rebalances the pH level. It has an exfoliating effect and is also moisturising.  It accelerates the skin’s cell regeneration the natural way. Lactic acid is suitable for all skin types, especially for treating acne scars.

So all in all, you shouldn’t be afraid to use acids. The widely available cosmetics products contain a concentration that cannot cause skin damage.
