Pulling, rinsing and chewing- is that the secret for snow white teeth? If we are to believe the green lifestyle advocates, then yes. Oil pulling is gaining more beauty fans in a time when we’re increasingly concerned about sustainability and naturalness. The ancient Indian natural remedy takes some getting used to, but it is a mindful ritual in the morning and also very easy to do.  Some dentists also recommend it. Positive effects of oil pulling

Oil pulling, also known as oil chewing, is like a rejuvenation treatment for your whole mouth. High quality plant oil is used. It’s moved around the teeth, binding to bacteria and so purifying your body.  This becomes evident with regular use. After only three weeks you’ll notice the first changes. Whether it’s firmer gums, whiter teeth or fresher breath, or an inner detox- there are many positive effects. It’s also thought to reduce headaches and sleeping problems and transform blemished skin, giving you a fantastic complexion. In brief: This little extra toothcare ritual is much more than a natural alternative to a rinse. It’s a real wonder weapon for beauty. 

 

Suitable oils

Basically any high quality plant oil can be used. Cold pressed sesame oil, olive oil and coconut oil are popular. Coconut oil have the most delicate and exotic flavour as well as an antibacterial effect. The mild aroma is good for beginners, but as ever it’s down to personal taste. If it tastes good, then it does you good too!

 

How does oil pulling work?

Oil pulling is really simple. All you need is a teaspoon, high quality oil and the time. The ideal time for the ritual is straight after getting up and before brushing your teeth. In Ayurvedic teaching, before oil pulling you clean your tongue with a tongue scraper. So your whole mouth is perfectly prepared for the natural cleansing. And this is what you do: Simply put a teaspoonful of oil into your mouth and now draw it around your teeth and chew it. 
Let the oil move around your whole mouth. Move it from your right cheek to your left, between your teeth and under your tongue for 10 minutes. The oil will soon have a milky consistency. At the end it’s important to spit out the oil, not swallow it. So all the toxins and bacteria in the oil are removed from your body. There isn’t any scientific evidence for the health benefits of oil pulling, but there are no known harmful effects. So: it doesn’t hurt to try. On the contrary: Many people swear by this healthy and cleansing start to the day!
